PEERS for Young Adults

About these groups:

Essential skills taught:

  • Choosing appropriate friends
  • Using electronic communication
  • Appropriate use of humour
  • Conversation skills
  • Organising successful get-togethers with friends
  • Developing romantic relationships
  • Appropriate dating etiquette
  • Handling arguments and disagreements
  • Handling rejection, bullying, teasing, and rumours/gossip

During group sessions, participants are taught the above skills and are given the opportunity to practice them in session during interactive activities (e.g. role plays, playing sports, boardgames). Parents/carers/support workers are taught how to assist their young adult by coaching them through weekly socialisation tasks.

Our PEERS group for Terms 3-4 2021 will be held on Fridays from 4-5:30pm either at our Charlestown clinic or online (pending COVID restrictions). We will schedule introductory meetings with each young adult and their support person(s) (e.g. parent) prior to the group starting, then the group runs for 15 weeks.
