PEERS for Preteens

About these groups:

Essential skills taught:

  • Conversation skills
  • Finding common interests
  • Making phone calls
  • Using electronic communication
  • Organising successful get-togethers with friends
  • Finding sources of friends
  • Choosing appropriate friends
  • How to use humour
  • How to be a good sport
  • Handling bullying and rejection
  • Handling rumours, gossip, and disagreements
  • Changing a reputation

During group sessions, participants are taught the above skills and are given the opportunity to practice them in session during interactive activities (e.g.role plays, playing sports, board games). Parents are taught how to assist their child to make and keep friends by coaching them through weekly socialisation tasks.

Our PEERS for Preteens group for Terms 1-2 2022 will be held on Fridays from 4-5:30pm either at The Place, Charlestown. We will schedule introductory meetings with each preteen and their parent(s) prior to the group starting, then the group runs for 14 weeks (with 2 weeks break over the school holidays).
